Winter Driving Tips

January 29th, 2010 | By Christie Matthews in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Jeff Presley from E-911 Dispatch sent us some winter driving tips to share. Be safe Fox Country!

Use slower acceleration and slower speeds. Avoid heavy steering and braking. Allow extra time to reach your destination during inclement weather. It is not worth putting your own life or the lives of others in danger to save time.

  • Drive with your headlights on.
  • Don’t get overconfident with four-wheel drive. It won’t help you stop any faster.
  • Winter road conditions often result in longer stopping distances. Give yourself room. If you have anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it. If you don’t have anti-lock brakes, gently pump the pedal.
  • Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady spots. These all have potential to develop black ice.
  • Avoid abrupt actions while steering, braking or accelerating to lessen your chance of losing control.
  • Look farther ahead in traffic. Actions by other drivers will alert you to problems and give you extra reaction time.
  • Trucks take longer to stop. Don’t cut in front of them.
  • Avoid using cruise control or overdrive. Don’t let your car make a bad decision for you.

 What to Pack…

  • Jumper cables to restart engine
  • Cat litter or sand for tire traction on snow and ice
  • Shovel to scrape snow away from tires
  • Ice scraper to clear windshield
  • Warm clothes gloves, a hat, sturdy boots, warm jacket and even a change of clothes
  • Blankets to keep warm inside the vehicle
  • Flashlights and extra batteries for increased visibility
  • First aid kit also pack necessary medications incase you are stuck on the road
  • Food pack items containing protein such as nuts and energy bars, also canned fruit and a portable can opener are good additions
  • Water bring enough for each person in your car and any pets
  • AM/FM radio to listen to traffic reports and emergency messages

Also consider…

  • Bring a cell phone if you have one with a list of emergency numbers.
  • Fill your gas tank
  • Baby formula and diapers if you have a small child.
  • If you find yourself stranded, be safe and stay in your car, put on your flashers, call for help and wait until it arrives.

Thinking Of Our Military

For those of you who know me well, you know how much I support our military. My dad and both grandfathers served in the United States Army. My husband’s grandfather also served. Not only do I support the men and women in our military because my family served, I just think its the right thing as an American to do.

In 1990, I watched a dear friend of mine head to war during Operation Desert Storm. He was just 19 years old. We were just kids really. During that time we were pen pals and I learned what war was really like. Well as much as a person can learn about war via a letter. I was scared for him, I prayed for his safety, I sent care packages and cookies. I did all I knew to do. Since then he’s served a couple tours in Iraq and will soon be headed to Afghanistan.

Yes, I’m sure we’ll continue our letters, now thru email of course and I’ll send those care packages and the oatmeal raisin cookies which are his favorite. But most of all, I will pray for him, for all the men and women who are serving.

There is a large number of soldiers from Fox Country who will be headed to Afghanistan in the next few days. I hope you will join me in continuing to pray for these soldiers and for their wives and their children.

Below is a story that was emailed to me today. I know it will touch your heart like it did mine.

The Sack Lunch

I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. ‘I’m glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap,’ I thought.

Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all thevacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation.

‘Where are you headed?’ I asked the soldier seated nearest to me. ‘Petawawa. We’ll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we’re being deployed to Afghanistan.

After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars. It would be several hours before we reached the east, and I quickly decided a lunch would help pass the time.

As I reached for my wallet, I overheard a soldier ask his buddy if he planned to buy lunch.  ’No, that seems like a lot of money for just a sack lunch. Probably wouldn’t be worth five bucks.  I’ll wait till we get to base.’  His friend agreed.

I looked around at the other soldiers. None were buying lunch I walked to the back of the plane and handed the flight attendant a fifty dollar bill.  ’Take a lunch to all those soldiers.’ She grabbed my arms and squeezed tightly. Her eyes wet with tears, she thanked me. ‘My son was a soldier in Iraq; it’s almost like you are doing it for him.’

Picking up ten sacks, she headed up the aisle to where the soldiers were seated. She stopped at my seat and asked, ‘Which do you like best - beef or chicken?’ ‘Chicken,’ I replied, wondering why she asked. She turned and went to the front of plane, returning a minute later with a dinner plate from first class.

‘This is your thanks..’  After we finished eating, I went again to the back of the plane, heading for the rest room.  A man stopped me. ‘I saw what you did. I want to be part of it. Here, take this.’ He handed me twenty-five dollars.

Soon after I returned to my seat, I saw the Flight Captain coming down the aisle, looking at the aisle numbers as he walked, I hoped he was not looking for me, but noticed he was looking at the numbers only on my side of the plane. When he got to my row he stopped, smiled, held out his hand and said, ‘I want to shake your hand.’ Quickly unfastening my seatbelt I stood and took the Captain’s hand. With a booming voice he said, ‘I was a soldier and I was a military pilot. Once, someone bought me a lunch. It was an act of kindness I never forgot.’ I was embarrassed when applause was heard from all of the passengers.

Later I walked to the front of the plane so I could stretch my legs. A man who was seated about six rows in front of me reached out his hand, wanting to shake mine. He left another twenty-five dollars in my palm.

When we landed I gathered my belongings and started to deplane. Waiting just inside the airplane door was a man who stopped me, put something in my shirt pocket, turned, and walked away without saying a word. Another twenty-five dollars!

Upon entering the terminal, I saw the soldiers gathering for their trip to the base.
I walked over to them and handed them seventy-five dollars. ‘It will take you some time to reach the base.. It will be about time for a sandwich. God Bless You.’

Ten young men left that flight feeling the love and respect of their fellow travelers. As I walked briskly to my car, I whispered a prayer for their safe return. These soldiers were giving their all for our country. I could only give them a couple of meals. It seemed so little…

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘The United States of America ‘ for an amount of ‘up to and including my life.’

That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.’

May God give you the strength and courage to pass this along to everyone on your email buddy list.

Prayer: ‘Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen.’

Prayer Request: When you receive this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our troops around the world.

abbeythedog

This is one of the kindest things you may ever see. It is not known who replied, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service. My friend Anna passed this along to me. She knew we had lost our beloved Petie a few months ago and thought it would bring me comfort. It did. If you have lost a pet, I hope you find that same comfort.

Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey.. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:

Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.  I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, ‘To Meredith’ in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, ‘When a Pet Dies..’ Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey &Meredith and this note:

 Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven.  Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.  Abbey isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

Love,
God

Shania Twain made a triumphant homecoming to her hometown of Timmins, Ontario, Canada on New Years Day where she carried the Olympic torch and then lit the community cauldron. It’s said it was so cold at -35 C with the windchill that a giant screen set up for the event wouldn’t work.
