On Thursday, Miss Abby Ring came to visit me in the Fox Hole. Abby is the 7 yr old grandaughter of Debbie and Terry Schug of Paragould.  I guess you’d call Abby a third generation Fox Fan!  Abby told her grandma that all she wanted to do this summer was to ” meet Christie Matthews”.  So of course, I wanted to make sure that happened! We had a great time hanging out in the Fox Hole. She’s a cutie as you can see in the picture above.  Abby also brought me a beautiful vase of my favorite flowers, Gerber Daisies. Thank you for making my day Abby!

South Carolina Was Awesome!

July 5th, 2010 | By Christie Matthews in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Well this years vacation was crazy! Several months ago we made the decision to go to Gulf Shores for vacation. We’d been to Destin so many times that the kids were rolling their eyes. So, me being the sneaky one thought we’ll go to Gulf Shores, still much like Destin but in a different state.  Jeff and I would still get the beach time and the kids would be satisfied that we were going somewhere different. Well, you obviously know that the oil spill ruined that for us. By the time it hit Gulf Shores, we switched to Destin, but just two days before we were to arrive in Destin, the Heath Department issued a warning not to get in the water. So, we scrambled to find a new vacation destination.

We chose Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and let me tell you it was awesome! It’s almost twice the distance of Destin but was worth it.  We broke the trip down into two days ( something I strongly encourage especially if you have kids) spending the night in Atlanta and driving the rest of the way the next day. For the return home we went through North Carolina. It was the most magnificent place I’d ever seen. Beautiful mountains!!  We literally crawled through the highest mountain terrain due to rock slides that crews were cleaning up, but it was the most amazing scenery.  From North Carolina we drove all the way across Tennessee, also beautiful. All in all we were in 8 states during our trip. The kids loved that because they got to mark off more states on their list of the U.S.

Everyone has been asking me where we stayed, suggestions on where to eat, what was the beach like, etc. So here’s my take on it.

The Drive- IS LONG!! But worth it!  ( See above)

The Beach- Not white like the Gulf Coast, it’s a light gray, still soft but tons more shells. We loved that. There’s also more beach, meaning you can walk way out to get to the water. The sand is firm, people were riding their bikes on it. Very cool.

Restaurants-  Take lots of money! Average dinner at night $100 plus. We were encouraged to stay away from the seafood buffets, wish we’d have listened. One of the worst meals we had was at one of the ” buffets”.  Our favorite restaurant in North Myrtle Beach was Fire Island.

Things to do: Go to Broadway On The Beach.  It’s really cool, there is a kiddie amusement park if you have little ones, boardwalks connecting everything.  There’s an I-Max Theatre, Ripleys Acquarium, shops and  restaurants including Margaritaville. Google Broadway at The Beach in Myrtle Beach to see everything.

The Tanger Outlet Mall was great too. Of course I have teenage daughters who love to shop.  My husband….not so much!

We stayed at Atlantic Breeze Ocean Resort. Great for families with little kids. The pool was only 4 1/2 feet, but it has a lazy river, two hot tubs and is right on the beach.  I went totally blind in booking this. But we lucked out and found it to be a really neat place.  I would also suggest you order a visitors guide. It’s free and shows you all the great resorts to choose from.

If you have any other questions feel free to call me. I’ll tell you what I know.

Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band will be joined by Kenny Chesney, the Zac Brown Band and other special guests during a free concert in Gulf Shores, Alabama on July 1st.

Tickets will be available from Ticketmaster beginning today (June 23) at 10 a.m. CT. There is a four-ticket limit, and tickets are required for entry. Organizers expect to accommodate up to 35,000 people at the event on the beach.

The concert is being organized to demonstrate support for and solidarity with residents, businesses and the culture of the Gulf Coast. Gates will open at 3 p.m., and the concert will start at 5 p.m.

A portion of the show will air live on CMT from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. Performances will be simulcast live on Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio and streamed live on CMT.com.

“There are always welcome breaks in every storm, but the unfortunate reality is that this disaster is not going away for a while,” Buffett said. “But a few hours of fun, void of the constant reminders of the situation, is a good thing, and that is basically what I do.”

( This is not really their star, it’s just a mock up I made on a star gnerator website.)

It  was announced today that vocal group Rascal Flatts was chosen for a 2011 star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame by the Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The band was selected from hundreds of nominations sent to the committee at a meeting held earlier this week.

“I am at such a loss for words that I can’t even describe how I feel,” says lead singer Gary LeVox. “What a great honor and symbol of accomplishment. To have only wanted to make music since childhood this far exceeds any expectations I ever had. I am so humbled and grateful to God for all of his blessings and this amazing gift He’s given us called music. Thanks to all who made this possible, especially our family and fans for making a dream a reality. You really can touch a star!”

“There are only a few things I can think of that are as big of an honor as receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” shared Jay DeMarcus, background vocalist and bass player. “I am so humbled, filled with gratitude and completely overcome with emotion…. I guess we’ve really done something afterall…”

Lead guitarist and background vocalist Joe Don Rooney said, “This is the kind of stuff you dream of growing up as a kid. Having our name on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has to be one of the coolest things that’s ever happened to Rascal Flatts. I’m honored and completely humbled.”
